Organic and Gluten Free Beauty Products

Article by Bee Lindquist

What is the meaning of Organic and Gluten Free beauty products? Often times we can get confused by labels. It seems as if everything today is labeled Organic or Natural. The other confusing name is “Gluten Free”? What do these labels mean and do I need to worry about them in my beauty products?
Let’s take these items one at a time.

OrganicAccording to the Organic Trade Association “Organic’ is a labeling term that denotes products produced under the authority of the Organic Foods Production Act. The principal guidelines for organic production are to use materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems and that integrate the parts of the farming system into an ecological whole.”Organic hair products are composed without any kind of integration. All these products are made without pesticides, chemical compounds, fertilizers, synthetic preservatives, fungicides, colors and things consisting of irradiated products. So there is no chance of any side effects from use of such products

Organic products can do wonders to your hair because they provide the necessary nutrients to the hair. As these products are free from any kind of superficial preservatives these are valuable for your hair and they also do not have any kind of side effects. Many conventional hair dye formulas contain chemicals like ammonia, which irritates the skin and lungs, and p-Phenylenediamine (PPD).

There are a number of high quality products on the market that you can find at your organic hair salon. Many of these brands aren’t only organic, but they are vegan friendly as well. This means no animals were tested or used in any way when it comes to the products themselves. The Beauty Studio carries several organic brands including Onesta, which is a part of the “sustainable manufacturing” movement. We also carry the Davines line of hair products which uses “green” containers, meaning they are fully recyclable.
Another item you might want to consider is whether the salon you are patronizing provides gluten free products. There seems to be an ever increasing population with gluten sensitivities. Your skin and hair absorb the products introduced to them which could be a problem for those with sensitivities.

Gluten FreeThe FDA does not have a clear definition of Gluten Free yet but the FDA proposes to define the term "gluten-free" to mean that a product bearing this claim in its labeling does not contain any one of the following:
An ingredient that is a prohibited grain
An ingredient that is derived from a prohibited grain and that has not been processed to remove gluten
An ingredient that is derived from a prohibited grain and that has been processed to remove gluten, if the use of that ingredient results in the presence of 20 parts per million (ppm) or more gluten in the food or
20 ppm or more gluten
According to Dr. Kenneth Fine, M.D. of EnteroLab.com, Gluten sensitivity is a systemic immune reaction to gluten anywhere in the body, not just that entering the body via the gut. Therefore, topically applied lotions, creams, shampoos, etc. containing gluten would indeed provide a source of gluten to the body, and we therefore recommend all such products be discontinued for optimal health
Since the cosmetic industry is self-regulated, it is more important than ever to carefully read labels, and use natural or organic products whenever possible. If you find yourself reacting to a cosmetic, it is possible that you may have an increased sensitivity to gluten, an allergy, or even Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The Beauty Studio carries Glo-Minerals which is not only organic but Gluten Free as well as the Eminence product line which is from Hungary.
The Beauty Studio is concerned about what is applied to your skin and hair as well as what goes into the environment. So if you have chemical or gluten sensitivities or if you just want to do your part to help the environment we can assist you in finding a product and a treatment. There really is no need for you to have to sacrifice quality and service just because you want to be able to do your part in helping the world and to the things that live within it.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes!

By Bee Lindquist:

We love our shoes and as such we want them to look fantastic forever. Years ago there was a saying if you want to know a man’s status look at the condition of his shoes. I believe that still holds true today. Your hair maybe perfectly coifed and your outfit may look like a million dollars but if your shoes are beat-up and dirty you will too.

Here are some simple tips to keeping even that $9.99 flip flops looking fantastic

  • Neaten up the frayed ends of shoelaces (and make it easier to lace them) by dipping them in clear nail polish.
  • Store shoes that aren’t worn often by stuffing the toe box with tissue paper and place in a pillow case as a shoe cover.
  • Remove scuff marks on shoes by rubbing with a baking-soda paste.
  • Use petroleum jelly to shine leather shoes. Apply with a soft cloth, wipe off the excess, and buff with a clean cloth.
  • You should keep waterproofing solution on hand for your new shoes, to be applied before exposing them to the elements.
  • Use a light coating of spray starch or Scotch Guard on new fabric tennis shoes before wearing them -- dirt can't become embedded in the canvas, and the shoes will always be easy to clean.
  • Clean the rubber on athletic shoes with baking soda sprinkled on a sponge or washcloth.
  • Use lemon juice to clean and shine black or tan leathers. Apply with a soft cloth.
  • Clean the salt residue common on winter boots with a cloth dipped in a solution of 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon vinegar. This will work on leather and vinyl.
  • Use a soft cloth dipped in vinegar to shine a pair of patent-leather shoes or any patent-leather item.
  • Shoes that are starting to smell can be helped by sprinkling with a little salt. Let sit overnight. The salt will help control moisture, which contributes to odors.
  • Put shoes in freezer to kill the odor causing bacteria.
  • Keep odor at bay by sprinkling baking soda into shoes to control odor and moisture.
  • Cobblers may strenghten the soles of more delicate dress shoes with a specially cut half-sole of leather or thin plastic. These extra layers for the bottom of the shoe provide extra traction and extend the life of the shoe. You can also have the Cobbler replace zippers, buttons, clasps and straps on pumps, along with replacing or shortening the heels and replacing the heel tips.
Remember Bill Connelly said “Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares?... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes.”

Vitamin Sun

Lately there has been a lot of hub-bub in the news regarding Vitamin D. Remember in elementary school when you learned the major food groups and what their benefits were? We learned that Vitamin D was key to absorbing calcium and therefore was added to to the milk we buy at the local supermarket. But what is it really and what are the benefits but more importantly are we getting enough?

It is crucial for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous, which have various functions, especially the maintenance of healthy bones. It is an immune system regulator.

It may be an important way to boost the immune system against disorders like the common cold, say scientists from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.

It may reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is much less common the nearer you get to the tropics, where there is much more sunlight, according to Dennis Bourdette, chairman of the Department of Neurology and director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center at Oregon Health and Science University, USA.
Vitamin D may have a key role in helping the brain to keep working well in later life, according to a study of 3000 European men between the ages of 40 and 79.
Vitamin D is probably linked to maintaining a healthy body weight, according to research carried out at the Medical College of Georgia, USA.
It can reduce the severity and frequency of asthma symptoms, and also the likelihood of hospitalizations due to asthma, researchers from Harvard Medical School found after monitoring 616 children in Costa Rica.
It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women.

Various studies have shown that people with adequate levels of vitamin D have a significantly lower risk of developing cancer, compared to people with lower levels. Vitamin D deficiency was found to be prevalent in cancer patients regardless of nutritional status, in a study carried out by Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in addition to weak bones. Populations who may be at a high risk for vitamin D deficiencies include the elderly, obese individuals, exclusively breastfed infants, and those who have limited sun exposure. Also, individuals who have fat malabsorption syndromes (e.g., cystic fibrosis) or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn's disease) are at risk.

It is easy to determine if you are getting enough Vitamin D. Next time you have your regular check up ask if they can include it on your Complete Blood Count Test. They will determine if you are lacking in Vitamin D. Talk to your physician about adding a Vitamin D supplement to your routine. While Multi-Vitamins are good they often do not contain enough of the recommended daily dosage to make a difference in your Vitamin D absorption. Make sure when purchasing any supplement that you read the label to make sure it does not interact with medications already prescribed and only buy tested products.

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids (A secosteroid is a molecule similar to a steroid but with a "broken" ring). In humans Vitamin D is unique both because it functions as a prohormone and because when sun exposure is adequate the body can synthesize it (as Vitamin D3). While we are all very conscious about the amount of sun we are exposed to because of cancer risk, it is important to get at least 15 minutes of sun light per day in order to synthesize Vitamin D.

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. Recently, research also suggests vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), USA found that 9% (7.6 million) of children across the USA, was vitamin D deficient (defined as less than 15 ng/mL of blood), while another 61 percent, or 50.8 million, was vitamin D insufficient (15 to 29 ng/mL).
The other benefits of Vitamin D according to the Mayo Clinic are:

Vino-Therapy

Sipping a glass of wine is one of life's most relaxing rituals. Associated with leisure and pleasure, vino-therapy now claims a wide range of proven health and beauty benefits.

Vino-Therapy, the use of wine and grapes in ritual skin and healthcare, dates back to the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome and the Middle East. Early healers and philosophers recognized that drinking wine was not only pleasurable but also healthful in moderation. They explored its topical uses as well. Hippocrates prescribed wine to disinfect wounds and purge fevers and folk healers of Europe were credited with having cured epidermal diseases with an ointment made from grapevine sap. Today's wellness-oriented guests turn to spas for vino-therapeutic treatments to improve their skin and for the sensation of relaxation and escape.

Joseph Vercauteren, Ph.D., a professor at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Bordeaux, discovered that the grape seeds are rich in polyphenols, which have positive effects on human skin. Polyphenols are stronger and more effective than Vitamin E. They reduce exposure to environment stressors that are responsible for wrinkles and skin aging. They can improve circulation by strengthening blood vessels. They also have anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. This polyphenols found in red wine acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Eminence Organic Skin Care recently began utilizing Tokay, a sweet Hungarian wine, rich in antioxidants and nutrients in its products. Its components are effective in contracting hyper-pigmentation and improving skin texture. When applied topically and given ample time to settle into the skin, as afforded by a mask, compounds in wine will reduce signs of aging and refine the dermis, restoring vitality. Key ingredients include antioxidant-rich grape seed, polyphenols, anti-aging and firming resveratrol from the stalks, brightening viniferine from the sap, hydrating vinolevure from the walls of wine yeast, and a naturally exfoliating grape acid.

Temecula Wine Country attracts visitors from all over the world and The Beauty Studio welcomes guests who wish to relax after a day of vineyard touring and tasting. Agnes Freeman, our Skin Care Professional, has created a 60 minute treatment. It begins with a tasting, your choice of white or red wine. For the skin, she mixes raw honey, cinnamon and grape seeds, and soaks the client in red wine to dissolve unwanted skin cells. A Tokay Hungarian wine mask, with essential oils, is freshly prepared for each client's skin and warmed before application. This is thoroughly massaged into the skin, creating a feast for the senses. Her creation is anti-aging magic that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation.

You Say Tomato

Tomatoes: Not Just for Bloody Marys!!
By Bee Lindquist

Tomatoes are they fruit or vegetable? This argument has been around for ages. The truth is they are a fruit. Mostly the tomato is a super-food. Not that it wears a cape and is able to leap buildings in a single bound, but in a “makes you healthy” way.

One of the most well known tomato eating benefit is its Lycopene content. Lycopene is a vital anti-oxidant that has been known to fight cancerous cell formation.

Free radicals in the body can be flushed out with high levels of Lycopene, and the tomato is amply loaded with this vital anti-oxidant. The rich redness in color of the tomato actually comes from the nutrient.

Our bodies do not naturally produce Lycopene yet the human body requires this anti-oxidant. Lycopene While other fruits and vegetables do contain this necessary health ingredient, no other fruit or vegetable has the high concentration of Lycopene.

Tomatoes are chock full of anti-oxidants which combat the signs of aging. They help reduce the amount of free radicals in your body which helps maintain the support system necessary for your skin and hair. They also help your body retain moisture, especially during times of the year when artificial climate control like heaters and air conditioners are running.

These machines can dry out your body and skin, but eating a tomato daily can help you keep your water level stable. That doesn’t mean you should pass on the regular water, though; it’s still important to drink about 8 glasses a day.

You don’t have to eat a bowl full of tomatoes, one a day will do. You can also have a refreshing glass of tomato juice with a little sprinkle of cayenne to keep you refreshed.

Remember daily consumption of a tomato will give you a rosy complexion and help keep you healthy, so don’t pass them up!

A Spa Retreat At Home

How to Create Your Own Home Spa Retreat
by Patricia Eggers

Relaxation techniques are unique and specific for each person. Purchase items that will be used by you for your pampering needs only. Buy in limited amounts so that you can test what works into your needs. Many times, you can obtain from a skin care professional, facial masques and trial sizes for little or no cost and are available for you to try out before you buy in larger quantities.

Using your senses will help create your space so that you can relax and enjoy the time you have put aside. Aromatherapy, though, is not for everyone. Some people have allergies to the scent of certain aromas. This is your body’s way of telling you that a certain scent is not for you! Test each scent and you will find the one that achieves your goal. People with kidney issues, pregnant women, or any other major health issue should first consult their doctor and/or an Aromatherapist. Lavender is a great all around scent that is relaxing and is generally safe for all to use. This is very relaxing to use in the evening before bed. Chamomile is another scent that is great before bed. Enjoy a cup of Chamomile tea while relaxing in a lavender bath! Use Chamomile tea bags as a compress on your skin to calm irritated skin.

Light and sounds can add to your session and stimulate or calm you down. In the morning, make sure you have a lot of fresh air and natural lighting, listening to happy tunes. In the evening, use dim candlelight and soft lighting and listen to soft music or a cd specifically playing spa music. Music should be relaxing and in the background, not overly stimulating. Set the stage for your ultimate spa treatment.

Giving yourself a steam facial with essential oils is fantastic and takes about 5 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes to do, resulting in hours of enjoyment. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser while the water is safely heating up. Boil the water and pour into a large bowl. Add essential oils to the water. Some suggestions: for dry skin, try geranium, rose or sandalwood. For sensitive skin, try jasmine, lavender or roman chamomile. For the mature skin care, try sage, geranium or lavender. Fresh lemon and cinnamon is refreshing and can be used for both evening or morning. Squeeze the lemon and drop the entire fruit into the bowl and add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon into the bowl. Place the bowl of water with your choice of oil and place the heavy towel over your head and the bowl to make a nice tent. Take nice, deep breathes for 5-10 minutes. Complete your session with your moisturizer or try a small amount of olive or avocado oil and massage in.

Using ingredients you already have can be a low cost way of feeling like you stepped into a spa retreat. Listen to your body when it comes to the frequency of different techniques, like body scrubs for example, and how to incorporate them into your weekly routine.

An example of a ‘spa treatment’ that you can do on a weekly basis starts with a nice warm bath and relaxing music. Prepare the area by collecting all the things necessary for your session so that it will be uninterrupted bliss!

You will need:
Two wash cloths
A rolled towel for your neck
A large towel or robe to wrap yourself in when you are finished
Exfoliating Body Scrub (recipes below or a recommendation from your skin care professional)
Relax for 5-10 minutes in your tub. Start exfoliating by lifting each part of your body out of the water and gently using circular motions with the product of choice until your body, from the neck to your toes, has been exfoliated. Rinse well. Pat dry and apply a heavy moisturizer or oil over your entire body. Wrap yourself in a warm towel or a robe. This has such great health benefits for skin.
Some recipes to try!
Exfoliating Body Scrub
Mix 1 tablespoon of coarse salt
2 tablespoons of either oil (olive, walnut, avocado, vegetable) or yogurt
1 tablespoon of honey
A squeeze of lemon or 2-3 drops of sweet marjoram, rose, sweet fennel or juniper oils or chopped rose petals. Essential oils can be found at reputable health food stores.
Exfoliating Oatmeal SockFill a clean old sock/stocking with 1 cup oatmeal
Let it soak in the tub with you until it softens, then scrub your body with it
Gentle ExfoliateAdd ¼-½ cup of Apple Cider Vinegar to your bath
Pampering is meant to be a special, out of the ordinary way of rejuvenating your mind, body and inner self. Set aside a time each week. Trying different times of day can help you decide how to make the most of your pampering time! Your skin is the largest organ in your body and needs attention. Give your brain a rest and soothe your body regularly!
Enjoy!

Spring into Summer!

Your beauty routine needs to refocus on one thing this spring: MOISTURE! After months of cold and windy weather, the time to switch gears is now.

First of all, skip the HOT shower in the morning or evening! You can cover your body in cream but if you have stripped your body of that protective barrier, it’s going to take a lot to get it back to that natural balance. Switch your soap to a creamier body wash that can add moisture while you cleanse. Dermalogica has a hydrating body wash and hydrating body lotion that are a great combination to hydrate while cleansing.

Nails can benefit from oils not lotions. Use this tip: rub some oil into your cuticles before pulling on your garden gloves. It works similar to wearing socks over your moisturizer at night to give your moisturizer time to heal.

Every line of hair products has developed a moisturizing and hydrating shampoo. Try one as your daily shampoo or as the alternate shampoo that you switch to when you feel sun and wind damage has changed the texture or look of your hair. Schwarzkopf makes a Sun Guardian Trio that has a shampoo, treatment and a spray leave in conditioner that has a sunscreen in it. This protects your hair from sun damage, color fading and if you apply this to your hair before going into chlorinated water, it will help prevent the ‘green’ tint that comes with swimming in chlorinated pools. Hydrating conditioners and treatments can be a great addition to your summer routine as well.

A second place that you may see dryness is in your lips. You may have heard that you can be addicted to lip balm. This really is not true, but if you feel that way, you may have an underlying issue. There is a barrier layer on your skin and when it’s very dry outside, that barrier gets disrupted, the layer gets tears and holes, so any moisture you put on your lips, seeps right back out. The solution is finding a hydrating balm with lipids that will give the barrier layer time to heal. Stay away from long-lasting lip color formulas and balms with menthol.

Products used under your makeup can help keep moisture in all day. Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair melts gently into your skin to help shield against environmental and internal triggers that cause skin stress. GloMinerals GloFace Primer creates the ideal canvas while filling in fine lines for a smooth base application. It contains antioxidants and extends the wearability of your foundation and ensures a flawless looking complexion. Dermalogica’s Boosters and Eminence Serums are meant to wear under your moisturizer to seal in moisture as well. They are in a liposome base to ensure the deepest possible penetration of concentrated ingredients to create beautiful glowing skin from within.

Sunscreen is a must at this time of year! Dermalogica’s Multivitamin BodyBlock has skin-smoothing Shea Butter but also has Oil of Evening Primrose. Without a greasy film, this spray can fight off environmental assaults that contribute to the visible signs of aging. Spf sprays, creams and lotions are needed EVERY day, not just when you are heading for the beach. Dermalogica’s entire Solar Defense system of products is hydrating while being protective!

Tips for Tweezing Eyebrows

Tips for Tweezing Eyebrows

Your eyebrows are one of the most important features of your face. They frame your face, show emotion and give your face and attitude expression. Take care to shape and maintain them by tweezing them carefully. The following are some tips to remember while tweezing because, unfortunately, it can be easy to overlook them or overdue them!!

1. Soften your face and eyebrows by tweezing after you get out of the shower. If you are in a rush and can’t do it directly after getting out, hold a warm washcloth to your face to have the same effect.

2. Tweeze BEFORE using any lotions or moisturizers so that the tweezers can get a hold of each hair and not slip.

3.Use a brow brush to lift the hairs and if the hair is above the thickest part of the brow, trim that off. Use the natural shape of your brows to get an organic look.

4. Use the brow brush again to comb out any loose hairs after tweezing or trimming.

5.The eyebrow should go a little past both corners of the eye.

6. Use the tweezers as close to the root as possible to pull in the direction of hair growth.

7. Tweeze ONE hair at a time. Try not to take any hair from above your eyebrow because it ruins the natural curve of your brow.

8. Take your time and check your progress as you go. It helps to outline your brow in white pencil to stay ‘within the lines’

9. As soon as you are done, use a cotton pad and astringent to dab around your eyebrows to tighten the pores back up. An ice cube also works if you still feel discomfort or redness appears.

10 Avoid tweezing close to important days like prom weekend or your wedding!

To start off a good shape with your brows, visit a skin care professional for an initial brow sculpting. We also have ‘lighted’ tweezers by TrendTweeze that help you get light right to the source!!

Put A Little Prep in Your Wardrobe

by Bee Lindquist

It seems every season there is a new fashion “craze” and as we enter into the new school year and fall season there is a new “old” look looming on the horizon. There are those however who never lost this look and are happy to have it back.

Picutre courtesy of beautyhill.com
Yes, we are bringing Preppy back. The
It is about mixing the clean-cut boyish cuts with some hot colors and fashion forward styles.
Glamour magazineis don't be afraid to add prepster extras like a short strand of pearls or a gold charm bracelet. Their retro appeal adds a hint of polish to these clothes. Where Marc Jacobs has a retro plastic and acrylic watch he adds to his look bringing the Swatch Watch look back to life.
Another tip from
How to pull it off?
Brooks Brother’s, Tommy Hilfiger, Top Sider wearing Preppies are happy to see the fashion trend back in their favorite boutique’s and stores. There is a twist to the Preppy fashion craze this time around and it’s not all about horned rimmed glasses and Hush Puppy shoes. In Style magazine suggest mixing one non-preppy element—say, chunky platform sandals—with a little white tennis dress. Or choose classics with surprise details, such as striped espadrilles with neon laces.
- A boy-girl mix is one way to go. Try wearing an oxford shirt over a pair of shorts with wedge sandals, or boyish brogues with a girlie print miniskirt.
- Another option: Mix in one none-preppy element, she suggest a chunky platform sandals with a little white tennis dress.
- Embrace collegiate fabrics and colors, but experiment with fit a seersucker jacket that looks shrunken or extra-big chinos for chic solutions.
-Add a Plaid Jacket to a solid pair of pants or skirt
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create this look, so be smart when picking the right pieces for you and make sure you don’t break the bank while following this trend. This trend is nothing new and it was been around for decades. So get on out there with a prep in your step

The Benefits of Yoga

<>by Bee Lindquist<><><>
<>
<><><><>

No one knows exactly when Yoga began but we do know that one of the earliest texts having to do with Yoga was a book called Yoga Sutras as early as the 1st or 2nd century B.C. by a Yogi names Pantanjali. The system that he wrote about is known as Astnaga Yoga or the eight limbs of Yoga. This is what is considered Classical Yoga and is the most practiced world wide.

Yoga arrived in the United States sometime in the late 1800’s and did not gain popularity until the 1960s as a part of the youth cultures fascination with all things eastern.

Over the past several years, yoga has experienced an upsurge in popularity in the western world among medical professionals and celebrities alike. Yoga is actually an ancient practice that connects the mind, body, and spirit through body poses, controlled breathing, and meditation. The practice of yoga has many health benefits associated with it. From lowering blood pressure to increasing pain tolerance, a multitude of health benefits can all be discovered within the body.

Recently the American College of Cardiology recommended Yoga as an important part of their treatment for atrial fibrillation. Prior research had shown other heart benefits of yoga, such as lower blood pressure and cholesterol and more elastic arteries, but this is the first study looking specifically at atrial fibrillation, said the authors, from Mid-America Cardiology at the University of Kansas Hospital.

These are exciting results," said Dr. Raul Mitrani, director of the cardiac rhythm device clinic at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Although it didn't cure atrial fibrillation, he added, it did seem to cut the number of "a-fib" episodes.

According to the Arthritis Foundation those who participated in eight weeks of yoga classes had significantly fewer tender and swollen joints than they did before starting class. Those in the waitlist control group saw no significant changes in their tender and swollen joint counts.

Arthritis Foundation grant recipient Steffany Haaz, MFA, says, “We have previously reported that yoga helps people to feel better, and we wanted to make sure it wasn't harmful to arthritic joints. So, we were glad to find that there actually seems to be improvement in joint symptoms for RA patients. The next big question is figuring out how and why yoga might be having this effect, since it is such a multi-faceted activity.”
Yoga offers many other benefits as well. Yoga exercises level out this physiological instability by relaxing and gently stretching every muscle in the body, promoting better blood circulation and oxygenation to all cells and tissues. This helps optimize the function of the endocrine glands and the organs of the female reproductive tract. This can help lessen the symptoms of peri-menopause as well as menopause. Yoga exercises also improve the health and well-being of the digestive tract, nervous system, and all other organ systems.
As a form of exercise, yoga offers benefits that are sometimes not easily found among other exercise regimens. Check out these reasons to include yoga in your or health program.
The mental and physical benefits from Yoga are many and varied. Physicians, psychologists, health professionals and wellness coaches recommend Yoga. Yoga is not age sensitive. Many local senior centers incorporate “Senior Yoga” into their activities programs as well as many “Mommy and Me” programs like the one at Yoga for Life encourage mothers to involve their babies into their Yoga routines.

Mineral Make-Up

By Pat Barry

Most women wear some kind of makeup. In some cases, makeup can have some health benefits as well and because of that, popularity of mineral makeup has taken off in the past few years. Mineral makeup has actually been on shelves for more than thirty years! What makes mineral makeup so different? Mineral makeup is a number of natural minerals that are sterilized, ground up and pulverized into a very fine powder and combined with other materials so that it can then be used as a makeup. For example, GloMinerals infuses a powerful antioxidant blend of vitamins A, C, E and green tea extract. They use only pharmaceutical-grade vitamins and minerals.

So what are the benefits of mineral makeup? Of course, first and foremost, it is oil free and non-come organic, which means that it will not clog your pores. These two facts are the main reasons many women like it. It allows your skin to breathe while you are wearing it. Because minerals are inorganic compounds, no bacteria or microbes can grow in the makeup and be transferred to your skin. Mineral makeup has a long shelf life since it contains no preservatives. Additionally, the lighter weight of this type of make up on the face is preferred by many women. Lastly, most of these mineral makeups contain some UVA/UVB for sun protection. The minerals reflect the sun rays off your face instead of any absorption of the rays. GloMineral makeup also has anti-inflammatory ingredients, including green tea extract, zinc and vitamin C which helps improve the appearance and condition of acne and rosacea-prone skin.

Natural mineral makeup can be found that can work for any skin type. Since there is no oil used in the production of this makeup, both dry and oily skin can benefit from using it regularly. Additionally, it is considered a great option in the fight to keep skin from aging. The ingredients in the makeup tend to make the skin glow and feel natural. The mineral absorption into the skin will help the skin in staying healthy and vital.
www.womensforum.com but our skin care professional or makeup artists at The Beauty Studio can answer any questions or concerns you may have about the health benefits of using mineral makeup, such as GloMinerals.

There are many reasons why you should consider mineral makeup. Whether it is the sun protection, the light weight which allows you to wear it longer, the impact on the aging process of your skin or healing properties for certain types of skin ailments, it is a good alternative to other makeup. It is very important to check ingredients. For example, some that contain mica, can be irritating to sensitive skin, or some contain talc, which can be an allergen for some people.

Bobbles and Beads

by Bee Lindquist

Coco Chanel by http://www.xdcr.com/

We all have our favorite bobbles we like to wear over and over. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s cameo brooch or a chunky necklace you bought on your last trip to Greece, heck it may be the funky earrings you found at the swap meet. The only problem is the more you wear them the more they look worn. The gold or gold tone begins to look dull and the beads look bland.

The next thing you know you have retired the piece to the back of your jewelry box and you forget all about it.
Here are some suggestions to keep you from forsaking your bling.
Immediately after wearing wipe down with a soft cloth. This removes any dead skin, dust and grime from the days wear. Next put the beloved piece in a plastic sandwich bag and seal it shut. That way it will be fresh for the next wearing. If the piece is already banished to the Siberia of your drawer, pull it out and refresh it.
Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar and 2 cups of water. Dip a soft cloth in the water and move all around the piece making sure to go over stones and metal pieces thoroughly. Take a wooden toothpick dipped in the solution and go into crevices to remove lodge grime. Once you have gone over the entire piece with the solution take a clean cool, avoid hot or warm water as it may dissolve older glues, and wipe the piece again then finish with a soft cloth. You will be amazed at how beautiful your bobble will be.
As you are cleaning check for loose stones and sprung prongs. These are simple fixes with a little jeweler’s glue and some needle nose pliers. Tighten any clasp and reattach chains using soft pressure to the metal. A cotton pad around the piece will protect it from denting.

When dealing with precious and semi-precious stones and settings always defer to your jeweler’s recommendations. When you can’t wait for your jeweler to clean your good pieces a quick soak in 1 part sudsy ammonia to 3 parts water will take the grime off, rinse in cool water and finish off with a quick polish from a soft cloth.

Don't Dry Up

By Bee Lindquist

Courtesy of www.brainwads.net

Summer is finally here and with it the dry arid temperatures in our valley are beginning to heat up. So how do you stay calm cool and collected in the heat? Simple, through hydration.

Your body circulates fluid much like a radiator and the circulation in your body helps dissipate heat, but when the air temperature is higher than 90° F, cooling by sweat is the only way to prevent the body from overheating. Your circulatory system can collapse because the heart and temperature control systems cannot dissipate the heat your body is generating. When working in the heat, the activity of the muscles generates even more energy. This makes it even more important to consume enough fluids to sweat and cool your body. If you are not sufficiently hydrated your body core temperature will rise and begin to destroy tissues and organs. Collapse can come on quickly. Your body will give you warning signs, don’t ignore them.
Working in our climate conditions requires planning and preparation. Your daily diet and how much viable fluid you consume plays a part in how well you can function in the heat. Heavy meals can divert blood flow to the gut reducing the body’s ability to cool itself. Eat small light meals more often instead of a single large meal. The breeze that cools you is also the breeze that dries you out. The fact that you feel cooler in a breeze indicates that water is evaporating and needs to be replaced.

Carbonated beverages and beer are not as effective at replacing body fluids and the alcohol actually increases your dehydration. Plain water at room temperature is the most quickly absorbed for re-hydration. Taking very cold beverages can be refreshing but actually closes the portals of absorption in your system and can lead to shock if you are nearing a crisis point.

What you lose when sleeping is important too. Your lungs need to keep moist to properly process the oxygen into your system. During the night the inhaling and exhaling of the dry air can rob your body of a lot of fluids. Starting the day with juice or a large glass of water helps replace these fluids. Starting the day with juice or a large glass of water helps replace these fluids. Coffee is just a bad idea during the hot weather, as a diuretic it robs your system of even more fluids.

Some signs of being properly hydrated are clear urine, moist lips and if you pinch your skin it will bounce back. Dry, cracked lips can be a sign of long term dehydration. Clothing is important. Loose fitting, breathable clothing can help wick the moisture away from your body and increase the evaporative cooling. Protecting your skin from the sun prevents sunburn. Wearing a light colored hat protects the face and keeps the brain case cooler. Take the time to erect a shade over a work are if possible. Water-proof sunscreens may actually block pores in their effort to help cool the body.

If you believe you have been over-exposed to the sun and heat, immediately get out of the sun and seek shelter. Begin to reintroduce fluids to the system, cool water is the best. (Very cold water may prove a shock to the system and exacerbate the symptoms). Drink it gently. Apply cooling compresses to points of high blood flow like the neck, wrists and inner thighs. Covering the victim in waterproof material and dousing with water is known to be successful in extreme cases. Rapid immersion in cold water of a victim in a critical state can be very dangerous, leading to stroke and heart attack. Immersion of the wrists and ankles in pans of cold water is safe and effective. Do not leave a person suffering from heat stroke or dehydration alone. Anyone suffering visible effects should seek medical attention.

So after a little preparation, get out there and enjoy the beautiful summer. Work slowly and deliberately, be willing to take breaks and know how to listen to the warning signs your body will give.
Plan on short days, starting as early as light allows. Carry a light portable shelter and wear breathable cotton clothing. Drink plenty of water.

Your age and weight has a profound effect on your susceptibility to heat related problems. After the age of 50 you are subject to increasing risk of overheating. After age 65 you are more than twice as likely to suffer heat related problems as someone in their 30’s. The larger you are the more at risk you are too. The distance from your skin to your body center and the amount of fat insulating the core dramatically affect the body’s ability to cool itself.

The best way to avoid heat exhaustion is to drink continuously; small amounts at a time are more quickly absorbed than bolting down two glasses at a time. It is also advisable to drink cool not cold water because your body will have to work to equalize the temperature of the liquid to your core temperature. Working outside you should consume up to 32 ounces of water and no less than 16 ounces per day for safety.

Gluten Free Cosmetics, Hair and Skin Products

By Bee Lindquist

For those diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, finding hair and skin products that are gluten-free can be challenging. It takes time to decipher the ingredients listed on each label and many of the product manufacturers do not know or want to disclose ingredients because the FDA does not require them to do so. Many times, when asked, they cannot guarantee that their fragrances are gluten free, even if they feel their shampoos and conditioners are free from wheat proteins.

When reading labels, it would be a simple task if ingredients were always listed as what they truly are, such as wheat, barley, rye or oats. Many times, they are listed as their scientific names like tritium vulgare (wheat), hordeum vulgare (barley) secale cereale (rye), or avena sativa (oats). There are ‘extracts’ from these grains that are listed as their scientific names as well as ‘forms’ of the grain in some products.

Many personal care products contain gluten since it is a common binder that helps ingredients stick together. However, many individuals on celiac disease forums report intolerance symptoms that include losing their hair and severe rashes and itching due to wheat sources in their shampoo. After switching to a true gluten-free version, the problems disappeared.

If you continue to suffer gluten intolerance symptoms, despite altering your diet, look into other exposure to gluten in different areas of your daily routine, such as your hair and skin products. An absence of symptoms does not mean the intestines are not being damaged. The safest alternative is to seek out fragrance-free, gluten-free shampoo, hair conditioner, makeup and cosmetics along with skin care products. It takes a very little gluten to set off an immune system response.

Some products that have hidden gluten, that you should also stay away from, are products such as toothpaste and lip balm (chapsticks). Elizabeth Hasselbeck wrote in her book, The G Free Diet, that she can’t tolerate any hair care products, body washes, lotions or anything that she comes in contact with have any type of gluten in it.

“If you use a cosmetic or skin care product that contains gluten and you develop a skin reaction, see your doctor or dermatologist to identify the cause. It is possible to have an allergy to wheat or another grain that could cause a skin reaction.”

There are many blogs and articles on the internet concerning different ways in which people found out what was causing reactions to gluten products. One woman had a nervous habit of chewing on her hair and thus, gluten free shampoo released unwanted gluten into her system. Another man had a problem with what he thought was acne blisters and found that the shampoo he was using had gluten, which he was allergic to, and was causing his problems. If you truly feel you have celiac disease, then it is suggested by many to stay completely away from and contact to that ingredient.

This subject has sparked a real interest in this ingredient by The Beauty Studio staff. We have learned that all of our GloMineral makeup, with the exception of the GloFace Primer and the GloLip Filler, is gluten free. We also contacted Eufora and Onesta to see which of their products are Gluten free. All of Eufora’s shampoos and conditioners are gluten free except the Momo Serum, Momo Cream and Solu Shampoo. These are a small fraction of the different types of shampoos and conditioners that we sell by Eufora. Onesta has told us that only Strengthening Shampoo and Quench Leave-In Conditioner do contain a small percentage of wheat protein. All of their other products are gluten free. We have a list of the Dermalogica brand of skin care products that are also safe and free from gluten. ALL Eminence Products are Gluten-free, Vegan and Parabin-free.

We are always concerned with our client’s health and beauty needs and if you ever have any questions or concerns about the products you use, please do not hesitate to ask. We will find out any information you need to make an informative decision.

Don't Boycott The Sun

By Pat Barry
With so much talk about how bad sun exposure can be for you, don’t feel you need to boycott the sun!! There are many benefits of being in the sun and here are what some of the experts have found.

1.Get your daily Vitamin D! Spending just 10-15 minutes a day in the sun can help you get an adequate supply of Vitamin D. This is needed by the body to promote bone health, boost immune function, reduce inflammation, improve neuro-muscular function, and even protect against some forms of cancer.

2.Helps you feel happier and sleepier! Another benefit of sun exposure is that it helps you to produce more serotonin, endorphins, and melatonin in your brain. Endorphins and serotonin are brain chemicals linked with feeling good and at ease. Melatonin is a nocturnal brain chemical that allows you to enter into sleep-mode more quickly at bedtime.

3.Increase your white blood cell and red blood cell production! Experts have found that the sun is good for you because it helps you produce more white blood cells, which enhances your immunity. Sun exposure also helps you produce more red blood cells, which means your blood becomes more oxygenated.

4. It kills dangerous substances on your skin! UV rays from the sun can actually kill viruses, bacteria, molds, yeast and fungi that may be found on the surface of your skin. In this way, sunlight acts as a natural antiseptic of sorts.

5. Clear up skin diseases! While excessive sun exposure can lead to premature wrinkling and even some forms of skin cancer, there are various benefits from sun exposure when it comes to your skin. For example, moderate sunlight has been shown to help clear up some cases of acne, psoriasis, and eczema to name just a few.

Of course, we always suggest use and re-application of SPF lotions EVERY day! We hope that you always protect your skin from the harmful rays but isn’t it nice to know that you don’t have to boycott the sun!!!?

Picking a Hair and/or Skin Beauty Advisor

By Patricia Eggers
.
When you enter a new salon or choose a new beauty advisor you are giving them the honor of providing you the treatment. You trust this staff member to understand your needs and desires. You are giving your appearance over to them and the final results will affect how you look and how you feel.

Choosing a Salon:Take the first step seriously. Check out the salon both in person and on line. What do the reviews say about it? Call the salon and do a 1-2 minute interview, ask how long the process you are wanting takes as well as what type of product do they use. Another good place to do research is on their web-site look for these bullet points

Do they have one?
Does it display their mission statement?
What type of education is the staff exposed to?
What does the salon stand for?
Where is it located? (Is it near your home or work? Is it in or near the mall? Look for one best suited for your needs.)What type of services do they offer?
Think about what you want in a salon. Do you want to be in and out as quickly as possible or do you want someone to takes time and is precise? Do you like a loud salon or one that is quiet and serene? Do you like scheduling appointments with the same staff member? When you have these answers then you can proceed in looking for the right beauty advisor/stylist.

Choosing a Beauty Advisor:Finding a service provider is like finding a best friend. You want her to be talented, caring and have amazing abilities. Remember you trust this best friend with how you look and feel. Use the same criteria that you use for finding the salon with the staff within it.

Does the technician go to monthly education?
Do they regularly attend hair and skin education trade shows?
How do they schedule and how does that fit your schedule?
How do they price their services and does it fit your budget?
Can you schedule a consultation before your appointment to help you decide how often and what types of services you will require?
Does the technician listen to what you are saying?
Getting a treatment should be within your budget, not just time and dates but within your dollars and cents budget as well. Plan a style or treatment that can be maintained. If you have $300.00 to spend today on hair or skin services will you be able to maintain this over and over again? Remember to budget in product, brushes and treatments in order to maintain the style, look or treatment. This means if your beauty treatment budget is $300 and your treatment costs $200.00 that leaves you $100.00 for product and utensils. Remember if you have a professional stylist/technician, so they will only guarantee the service if you maintain the care with products they recommend. You are investing in yourself, so make the most of your dollar. Find someone that cares about your looks and beauty with passion.

Will you be getting a relaxing service so you can refuel, re-energize and be beautiful or will there be kids and loud noises? If you are getting skin services is there someone who can give a shampoo and blow dry at the same time? What conversations are going on around you in the salon? Is the technician concentrating on you or focused on the other stylist? Do they discuss health and beauty tips with you while you are being treated? Are all services taken seriously and treated equally?

So remember before you go off to just any salon, make sure to do your homework and choose one that will fit for you. It really is all about you.

Aging Skin:7 Habits That Make Skin Age Faster

By Pat Barry
Many of the external causes of aging skin are determined by the health and lifestyle decisions you make every day. Making unhealthy choices can cause prematurely aging skin, and this makes you look older, faster.
An important part of any anti-aging skin care program is to know what you may be doing that is harming your skin and speeding up your skin’s aging process.
Here are 7 habits that contribute to aging skin, making you look older than your years:
1. Cigarette smoke
2. Sun exposure
3.Lack of exercise
4. Exposure to cold weather
5. Alcohol use
6. Stress
7. Lack of sleep
While aging is inevitable, there’s a lot you can do to look your best at any age. Taking good care of yourself is the most important step in your anti-aging skin care program.

Parts of this article are taken from Senior Living, Aging Skin: 7 Habits That Make Skin Age Faster by Sharon O’Brien, About.com Guide.
: Too little sleep makes you look and feel tired. One of the first places lack of sleep shows up is on the face, with dark circles and bags under the eyes, and sagging skin. Lack of sleep is also a major factor in memory loss and symptoms of depression that include low interest in daily activities and negative thinking. Most adults function best with 8-9 hours of sleep a night.
: Maybe you’ve heard this expression: “Don’t frown, your face could stay that way.” Stress and worry cause frowning and overtime the muscles in the face actually conform to that movement. A good anti-aging skin program should include meditation, yoga, gentle exercise or other relaxation techniques. Keeping stress in check keeps frown lines to a minimum.
: Alcohol contributes to aging skin by dilating small blood vessels in the skin and increasing blood flow near the skin’s surface. Over time, these blood vessels can become permanently damaged, creating a flushed appearance and broken vessels on the skin’s surface.
: Cold winds and low temperatures contribute to aging skin by making skin dry, so if you venture out in the cold, be sure to use a good moisturizer. It’s important to use a good moisturizer indoors as well because heated rooms can be drying .
: Living a sedentary life contributes to aging skin, because exercise helps to tone your muscles and get your blood flowing. Exercise should be an important part of every anti-aging skin care program. Look and feel younger by MOVING!
: Sun exposure is very aging to skin. Unprotected skin that is exposed to the sun becomes more mottled in appearance. Freckles can turn into brown sun spots, the skin takes on a dry, leathery appearance and wrinkles and sagging increase. The good news is that sun damage is avoidable, if you start now with use of sunscreens.
: Whether you smoke, or you spend time with a smoker, cigarette smoke is damaging and aging to your skin. Research has shown that exposure to cigarette smoke significantly increases skin wrinkles and dryness. Smoke depletes your body of Vitamin C, which is a key ingredient for keeping skin plump and moist.

Holistic Remedies for Hypertension or High Blood Pressure

By Pat Barry
Holistic or natural remedies for hypertension or high blood pressure can be attractive to many of our clients who want results without medications. First of all, the person needs to be assessed by a qualified professional.

The most important dietary recommendation for lowering blood pressure is to add more plant foods to the diet. A primarily vegetarian diet contains much less saturated fat and refined carbohydrates. It also includes one of the most effective ways to lower blood pressure by including more essential fatty acids.

Fish oil, flaxseed oil and salba are all rich in the omega-3 fatty acids that research shows lowers blood pressure. Another dietary change you can make is to eat two apples a day. This helps lower blood pressure due to the pectin in that fruit.

Eating raw garlic or taking garlic supplements will effectively address hypertension as well.

But the most excellent and effective results may be to include taking supplemental red yeast rice in tablet form and eating a kiwi a day.

Speak slowly, breathe deeply and get a pet! All of these are ways to bring balance back to your body.

KERATIN SMOOTHING TREATMENTS

By Kelly Archer

This week’s article was submitted by the newest addition to our team, Kelley Archer, who has recently moved from Florida. She has 20+ years experience being a stylist and is certified in the Coppolla Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy. We are asked many times over, “How does the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy work and is it safe on your hair?”
Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy was launched in 2007 and is now the leading smoothing system in the world. The company was founded by stylist and salon owner, Peter Coppola. All of the Keratin products are formulated to contain natural Keratin protein which rebuilds, restores and rejuvenates all hair types.
Keratin eliminates up to 95% of frizz and curl and adds amazing shine and silkiness to the hair. It can be used on colored and chemically processed hair. When doing a Keratin Treatment, you are restoring and restructuring the hair by infusing a special blend of Keratin deep into the cuticle. The Keratin is bonded into the cuticle by heat of a flat iron to relax the hair’s sub cuticle layer. The treatment can be done directly after color or highlights. It will actually seal in the color and extend the life of the color.

Unlike some other smoothing systems, Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment does not contain formaldehyde and contains Alde Hyde, which is not cacogenic, or cancer-causing. Over time, our hair looses its keratin because of blow-drying, flat ironing, etc and this process infuses keratin back into the hair.
This process, depending on the length of your hair, can take anywhere from 2-4 hours. The effect of smoother, less frizz hair can last between 3-5 months.

To maintain this service, a stylist will professionally recommend Keratin Color Care Shampoos and Conditioners, Keratin Care Shampoo and Conditioners, Vanilla Bean Deep Conditioner, Infusion and/or Shine products that we carry at The Beauty Studio.
