Tips to Beat Burnout!

The first signs of stress are worry, irritability, insomnia and general fatigue. In more severe cases stress can lead to alcohol and drug abuse, severe depression and perhaps even heart disease. Of course, not all stress is work-related: it can come from one’s personal life as well. But recognizing the early signs of the condition are relatively easy, and following these tips may help:

  • Recognize the warning signs
  • Keep a stress diary
  • Get your priorities straight
  • Share your feelings
  • Take time off
  • Be alone
  • Get support or help
  • Recognize Codependency

Don’t think longer hours are better-they’re not. To work smart is the solution. Learn time management skills and find ways of making your working day more productive in the hours available. If you think the whole office will collapse when you leave it, then you’re not managing yourself/time properly. Manage wisely.-it is a great contributor to stress, resentment and burnout. If you find you are doing everything to please everyone and have the expectation that you will receive ‘something’ in return-you are mistaken.

You must verbalize expectations and ask for what you need. It is appropriate to ask for ‘kudos’ and praise.-a support system, such as a 12 Step Fellowship program, family and friends can be great sounding boards. -spending a little time alone from everyone is a good thing. Go and eat lunch for one, read the paper, do some shopping. A few hours will make all the difference.-this sounds obvious, but it is very easy to continue working through holidays. When you have planned leave, stick to it. If taking prolonged holiday is impossible, then be sure to make the most of your weekends.

Remember to switch your mobile phone off occasionally too!  When you continue to bottle them up you’ll inevitably explode at some point. Let people know how you feel, constructively.-knowing what your core values are and building your schedule accordingly may help. Think about what is important at work and what is not. If you can delegate, do it and learn how to say ‘no’.-If you find you are getting stressed every day it may help to keep a journal. Every time you are stressed, take a note of what happened, the people involved, what you did and what you think you should have done. Focus on what your ‘part’ is in the situation. After a while, you may start to recognize trends in the diary, which pinpoint when you are about to get stressed.- the first physical manifestations of stress include headaches, stomach cramps and muscle tension. This is a warning to deal with the situation before it gets out of control.
